“Why does bacon have to taste so good?”

Thalia asked the question out loud at the counter of the Main Street Diner, as she popped the last bite into her mouth.

“It’s just more proof that God loves us,” Larry Campbell said at her side. His brother, Jerry, agreed.

Thalia laughed out loud. It wasn’t the answer she was thinking of, but she had a hard time disagreeing with the logic.

“Well, we’re off to work.” Jerry gave her a pat on the back as he finished off his own breakfast and stood. “Will we see you back here tomorrow?”

Thalia shook her head. “It’s my day off.”

“We’ll miss you,” he said, throwing down a couple of dollars for tip and heading for the door. “Have a good one.”

“You too,” she called after him, a warm feeling filling her chest.

It had been three days since she’d started having her breakfast at the counter with the Campbell boys and already she’d become something of a fixture. It had taken more than a little bit of courage that first day to sit down on that red, round stool, but the guys hadn’t turned her away. Sure, they might have raised an eyebrow at first but after a few minutes, after no one had been scalded by coffee, or ended up wearing their order of steak and eggs, they’d struck up a conversation with her.

It turned out that Thalia liked spending her mornings making small talk with them. And, even more surprising than that, they liked her right back.

Three days and no disasters. Sure there were little things—her shoelace broke yesterday and this morning her garbage disposal stopped working—but those could happen to anybody.

They could happen to anybody.

Thalia smiled as she took another bite of buttered toast. It was a very different way of thinking about things, but one she could get used to.

Britney came over and filled her coffee cup.

“You’re in a good mood today,” she said.

Thalia shrugged her shoulders. “Must be all this Christmas spirit.”

“You’re sure there’s nothing else making you smile?”

“What do you mean?” Thalia asked, her brows pulling together.

“Oh, nothing.” The wicked twinkle in Britney’s eye told another story though. But before Thalia could press her for more, she lifted the coffee pot and started filling the other mugs lined up on the long Formica counter.

A moment later, someone stepped into the empty spot by her side. “Is this seat taken?”

“Nope.” Thalia shook her head as she lifted another bite of pancakes to her lips. “It’s all yours.”

“I was hoping you’d say that.”

Thalia swiveled around at the sound of the familiar voice.

Nate.

Her mouth hung open as he took a seat next to her. She’d been waiting for this moment. Waiting and hoping…and pulling out her hair in anticipation.

He’d told her he’d come back to town, sure, but she’d been acting like a lunatic when he’d said it. She’d practically begged him to stay away. She wouldn’t have blamed him if he never drove through town again.

Except he had. And now here he was. Sitting next to her.
